Starting out as Canadian Arena Corp., the company focused on facilities for hockey and other sporting and cultural events. The company has expanded well beyond its hockey roots to include residential land development and home building. During the real estate recession of the 1990s, Brookfield Properties expanded into the North American office market with several key acquisitions. It gained a 50% interest in a seven-million-sf portfolio of office properties in Toronto, Denver and Minneapolis from BCE Inc. In 1996, it bought a 46% interest in World Financial Properties, the corporation formed from the bankruptcy of Olympia & York, in a deal that included three of the four towers of theWorld Financial Center, One Liberty Plaza and 245 Park Ave. in Manhattan and 53 State Street in Boston for a total of 14.7 million sf. (Brookfield’s interest has since increased to 99.4%.) More recently, Brookfield Properties teamed up with Blackstone in 2006 to buy Trizec’s portfolio of office properties in New York City, Washington, DC, Los Angeles and Houston for $7.2 billion.
